“Naadi” means pulse, and “Pariksha” means examination. So, Naadi Pariksha literally means pulse examination. It is is one of the oldest diagnostic techniques in Ayurveda, the traditional system of medicine that originated in India over 5,000 years ago.
In Ayurveda, the pulse is not just a heartbeat. It is a reflection of your body’s internal balance. By reading the pulse carefully, an experienced Ayurvedic doctor can find out:
Your body constitution (called Prakriti)
Your current imbalances (called Vikriti)
Early signs of physical or mental illness
How well your organs and systems are functioning
Emotional patterns or stress stored in the body
It is done by placing three fingers on the wrist, where the radial artery runs. Each finger corresponds to one of the three main energies or forces in the body, known as doshas.
The Three Doshas: Vata, Pitta, Kapha
In Ayurveda, your health depends on the balance between three biological energies, or doshas. These are:
1. Vata Dosha
Made up of air and space elements.
Controls all movement in the body, like breathing, blinking, muscle movement, and even the flow of thoughts.
When balanced: you feel energetic, creative, alert, and light.
When imbalanced: you may feel anxious, constipated, have dry skin, joint pain, or trouble sleeping.
2. Pitta Dosha
Made up of fire and water elements.
Controls digestion, body temperature, hunger, thirst, and intelligence.
When balanced: you are focused, have good digestion, and a strong appetite.
When imbalanced: you may feel irritated, have heartburn, skin rashes, or excess body heat.
3. Kapha Dosha
Made up of earth and water elements.
Provides structure, stability, immunity, and emotional calm.
When balanced: you feel grounded, loving, and strong.
When imbalanced: you may feel heavy, sluggish, emotionally dull, or gain weight easily.
Every person has a unique combination of these doshas. That personal blueprint is called your Prakriti. Health problems begin when your current state (called Vikriti) starts to move too far from your Prakriti. Naadi Pariksha helps identify this.
What Can Naadi Pariksha Detect?
An experienced practitioner can detect:
Digestive issues
Sleep disorders
Hormonal imbalances
Stress and anxiety levels
Respiratory and circulatory problems
Reproductive health
Early signs of disease before symptoms appear
It also reveals mental and emotional patterns. For example, a person may not show obvious signs of stress, but the pulse may reveal deep mental tension. Or someone may be eating healthy but still have poor digestion, and the root cause may show up in the pulse as a dosha imbalance.
